When she first saw him, Era thought Claude was handsome and funny. A little ironic, really, since Claude had always been considered a quiet man. They met while attending night school in Atlanta, when Era was only 14 and Claude only 16. Times were hard, the Great Depression persisted, but they found joy in each other. Era and Claude were married on April 8, 1933. Although they both grew up in Atlanta, they bought a little house in East Point, which they promptly paid off in only six years. While living in East Point, Era and Claude welcomed the arrival of their two children, Butch and Sandra. As the years passed, Era and Claude happily rejoiced in the births of four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Era and Claude attribute their long, happy life together to their trust in God as well as their trust in and communication with each other. They have always put their family first after God, and have always helped any family member in need. After living many years together, they encourage young couples to plan a future together, and take each day one step at a time. After being married for nearly 75 years, Era and Claude are a tribute to perseverance and true love, a legacy they have passed on to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Editor’s Note: This article is in tribute to Claude Norris who passed away just days before we were to go to press with Around Town East Cobb. We at Around Town East Cobb extend our deepest sympathies to Era and her family.
